History: Elle Bishop was the daughter of Robert Bishop, one of the founders of the Company. She was born in 1983 and her mother died when she was very young. As a small child, Elle discovered that she had electrical abilities. Her daddy Bob being the sweetheart that he was decided to experiment on his daughter. Prior to this, Elle was a normal girl with abilities, Noah had described her as being all rainbows and unicorns and Bob took that away from her.
The experiments caused a fracture in her mind, the human brain wasn't built to take that much electricity. She would often get bloody noses or pass out and Noah and the others would want to call it a day, but Bob said she was tougher than that and continued. As a result of these experiments, Elle was never right again. She became a sort of sociopath and very sadistic. She conveniently does not remember any of the experiments because Bob ordered the Haitian to take the memories from her.
Since she had pretty much gone crazy and was a danger to others, Elle was mostly confined to the Company facility in Hartsdale, New York. She spent the majority of the last sixteen years of her life there when she wasn't on assignment. She was born a company girl, and that was instilled into her from a very young age. While most parents showed their children love and affection, Bob showed his daughter discipline and battle tactics. She was more of a weapon than a person to him, right from the very beginning.
When she was around seventeen or eighteen, she used to go and visit Adam Monroe, frequently. It is unknown what happened between them, but Adam implies he gave into temptation once and he was still paying for it.
When she was old enough to go on assignments, she did. One of her first assignments was watching Claire because Bob said she would be joining them some day. This did not go over well with Noah or with Eden and Elle left drenched and fried. One of her other assignments was recruiting Matt Nuremberg, his mind was like the hard drive of a computer.
Elle sort of fell for Matt and when he died during a company extraction of the information stored in his mind, Elle mourned him. This was not the typical behavior of a sociopathic girl, so it is possible that Bob had Elle diagnosed as such so that he could control her better.
Perhaps the most significant assignment Elle ever got as a company agent was one that she took with Noah, which was investigating Gabriel Gray who was rumored to have a pretty cool ability. She was reluctant to do the assignment, but she knew she didn't have much of a choice.
The first time she ever met the watchmaker, he was trying to hang himself in his shop. Elle zapped the rope and it frayed and broke off. She saved his life and talked to him about his murder of Bryan Davis. Somehow she gave him the strength to go on. They started hanging out so Elle could get the company some more information about known people with abilities. They shared pie and friendship, and Elle found herself falling for the mark, though she denied this when Noah asked her later on.
When Noah said that they needed to see him use his ability to kill someone, Elle refused. She was not going to do that. Again, she realized she didn't have a choice when Noah handed her her jacket and informed her that she could go be a waitress or something. She agreed to continue with the assignment, though she did not like it at all.
She had stolen Gabriel's list of people with abilities and invited one of them over for dinner with them, in an effort to make Gabriel jealous. He didn't want to kill again but he couldn't resist having that power. Elle was thrown into a wall after zapping Gabriel when she realized he was going to kill the kid. Gabriel told Elle to get out and she left in a rush. After that Gabriel Gray really started to become Sylar. Elle felt guilty about her part in turning him into a monster, and every single one of his kills is also on her, as much as it is on him.
After Peter nearly blew up New York City, Bob and Elle showed up at the hospital he brought Nathan to. Elle blasted him and Bob scolded her for hitting him so hard but Elle said he could take it. They took Peter to the Company facility in Hartsdale, New York. They kept him there for months under the pretense that they were working on a drug to cure him so that he would not be a danger anymore.
Elle paid him frequent visits to give him the Haitian pills to suppress his abilities. She also played with Peter a great deal during this time, and she started to fall for him. When he kissed her, she zapped him with her mouth and grinned at him. This was one of the moments of her life when Elle showed how childlike she still was.
When Peter escaped with Adam Monroe, she was very hurt because she thought they'd been developing a bond. It was hard to know that he was just using her. All she wanted was for someone to love her, it's what she'd been missing for her entire life. Bob never loved her. Matt might have loved her some day but he was gone now. Gabriel Gray might have fallen for her if she didn't corrupt him and turn him into a monster, but it was all too late now.
Sometime later, Elle showed up in Cork, Ireland looking for Peter Petrelli. She was at the docks and talked to a guy that pointed her in the direction of the Wandering Rocks Pub. She did not find Peter there and she was unhappy that Ricky was lying to her so she fried him. She did not appear to show much remorse for this, because he was just some guy. Bob was not happy and ordered her to come home.
Not too long after that happened, Elle was working with her father and Mohinder Suresh in an effort to get Claire's blood because they believed it had healing properties. Of course first they had to take care of Noah, but Noah tricked them and kidnapped Elle in exchange for Claire. During the trade off, Elle freed her hands and blasted West who was flying off with Claire, then she turned to blast Noah but he quickly shot her in the shoulder. She collapsed into her daddy's arms and Noah was going to shoot him too for messing with Claire but instead Mohinder shot Noah and killed him.
Mohinder was able to bring back Noah with Claire's blood that Bob had gotten earlier, and Elle was just supposed to watch Claire. There ended up being a confrontation that ended with Claire wanting to expose the Company. This caused Bob to bench Elle because he was disappointed in her. She talked with Noah who told her about what Bob did and Bob kicked her out of Noah's cell.
Later she was in her father's office looking for her file. She found it, but it was completely empty. She watched the monitors that Bob had set up in Mohinder's lab and was surprised to see Sylar with Mohinder, Maya, and Molly. She decided to go after him proclaiming that her father was going to be so proud of her. She did confront Sylar and he shot at her but she ducked, she was able to blast him in the back but when she chased after him, he was gone. She returned to the loft stating that her father was going to kill her, but Mohinder told her she'd saved all their lives, to which she replied "cool".
Elle continued to chase after Sylar, but he was always one step ahead of her, which drove her nuts. He was killing a lot of people, and Noah informed her that she was the bait, because the Company policy was always one of us, one of them. She never did catch up to Sylar and as a result, he took Claire's power. Bob berated her for letting this happen since Sylar kept killing their agents. When Elle returned to her father's office later, she found Bob dead and she knew Sylar had been there.
She grabbed a gun and went to let Noah out of his cell, declaring that Sylar had killed her father. Sylar knocked Elle down and Noah shot him, but because he had Claire's power, the bullets didn't kill him. He slammed Noah into the ceiling and proceeded to attack Elle. He taunted her by showing her what her father used to be able to do and then sliced her head open to kill her, this caused Elle to emit a large enough blast of electricity to knock Sylar unconscious. Unfortunately, it also caused the power grid to malfunction and all of the deadliest prisoners in level five escaped. When Angela took over the Company she fired Elle.
Ever since Sylar's attack, Elle's power had been malfunctioning. She went to Europe to seek assistance from Claude and while she was on a train there, Daphne Millbrook gave Elle a Pinehearst card. She didn't really know what it meant at the time, but she kept it. After accidentally zapping one of her new friends, she went back to Costa Verde to see if Claire could help her. Elle had been in constant agony, she could not eat or sleep, or do anything, and she wanted it to stop.
She decided to wait for Claire, but Lyle surprised her, so she blasted him. When Claire and Sandra returned home to see the lights flickering, they knew something was going on. Claire attempted to throw Elle out and the girls fought. Elle blasted Claire but was surprised when she saw the girl did not seem to be feeling any pain. Lyle threw a bucket of water on Elle and she screamed and shrank back against the cabinets. Later, she talked to Claire who told Elle she could not feel anything anymore. Elle declared that she wished she had Claire's problems. They decided to go to Pinehearst and see if they could fix them.
On the plane, Elle's ability was putting everyone in jeopardy, but she could not control it. Claire made Elle force the electricity into Claire because she could take it and she didn't want Elle bringing the plane down. When they got to Pinehearst, they were greeted by Peter who had been thrown out of a window. Claire wanted Elle to help get the injured Peter to the car because he was not healing, but Elle ran into the building because she needed these people to fix her. She was captured and locked up.
Sometime after Elle's capture, Sylar was locked in the room with her. Overcome with grief and anger, Elle blasted him over and over again. Sylar said he could take it all. Eventually he taught Elle to forgive herself, as he'd already forgiven her and he took her ability through empathy. Elle taught him how to use it, and the two became very close.
Later, Arthur Petrelli wanted Sylar to go after Claire and Elle declared that she was going to go with him. She did and when the eclipse happened and she shot Claire, Noah was going to kill them both but first he had to save Claire. While he was gone, Sylar and Elle made love. Noah soon returned for his revenge. He shot Elle in the leg and Sylar had to get her out of there. Their powers returned later, but not before Noah slit Sylar's throat while Elle watched from where she was hiding.
They went to the Bennet's house for revenge and Noah placed seeds of doubt in both of their minds. Hiro popped in and teleported Sylar and Elle to a beach. On the beach, Sylar turned on Elle declaring them both damaged and that they could not change. He killed her there, presumably because she was lying to him and because she would have become a liability. He couldn't have that. Elle died on the beach, betrayed by the man she might have loved, though she did know on some level that she had more than deserved what she got.
Personality: Elle's personality is very complicated. At a first glimpse, most would see that she is a sadistic person, that there is something off about her. She's very flirty, snarky, and she can be a real bitch. She doesn't seem to have much regard for right or wrong and she does as she pleases. She has hurt and killed people and that doesn't seem to phase her.
There is more to her than that, but it's hard to get close enough to see. In many ways, Elle is still a child. Her childhood was stolen from her by her father, who then erased her memories. The damage the experiments did to her is evident in her personality. She is desperate for affection, and her whole life all she wanted was the love and approval of her father. She has also carried a tremendous amount of guilt with her over some of the things she's done, most notably to Gabriel Gray. He saves her by forcing her to forgive herself and for awhile Elle is...almost normal. And then when she is killed on the beach, she is grateful for the release.
Now Elle is confused and disoriented but not for the same reason that everyone else here is. She died, and coming back from something like that...it messes with a person. Elle Bishop is not a woman who is easy to define, she is who she is and there is little can be done about it.
